NEW GUIDELINES Released for vWD (von Willebrands Disease)

A global collaboration of hematologists, scientists, and 4 individuals living with vWD developed 11 new guidelines on the diagnosis and 8 additional guidelines for the management of vWD. This was all accomplished with the joint efforts of the American Society of Hematology (ASH), the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH), National Hemophilia Foundation (NHF), and World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH).

The diagnosis guidelines generally focus on the use and nonuse of certain tests specific to the different variants of vWD, such as types 1, 1c, 2a, 2b, and 2n.

The management guidelines focus on a wide range of treatment options from prophylaxis of vW Factor concentrate, to tranexamic acid, to contraceptives specific to the many situations various patients find themselves in.
